South Sea Pearls

Pearl Creation

While most jewelry is fashioned from precious metals and stones buried deep within the earth, a pearl is one of the few jewels that is created within a living creature; an oyster. Pearls are currently cultivated by inserting a tiny foreign substance into the mantle of the oyster. Upon insertion, the oyster engages in a natural biological process of releasing nacre material that surrounds the foreign substance and protects the oyster's environment. The result of numerous layers of secreted nacre material is a beautiful natural pearl.

Oysters are capable of producing a number of different shapes, ranging from off-round baroque to tear-like drops. A perfectly round pearl is the rarest shape for an oyster to produce, and thus is the most valuable in a pearl harvest. Pearls also derive from different regions of the world and come in assorted colours and styles. Freshwater Pearls are cultivated in artificial water pools and usually derive from Asian countries such as China. South Sea pearls are cultivated in natural ocean lagoons in countries such as Tahiti, Australia and the Philippines.

South Sea pearls include golden pearls which derive from Indonesia or thePhilippines. Indonesian golden pearls are usually lighter colour and lower quality. Because of their lower cost, Indonesian pearls are often dyed to achieve a richer more vibrant golden colour. Golden pearls from the Philippines have a rich dark golden overtone which is completely natural and allows for exceptional lustrel.

Australian pearls are known for their rich satin lustre and creamy white colours which derive from the tropical waters of the South Sea. Lastly, South Sea pearls include French Polynesian Tahitian pearls, which are also known as black pearls. Pearls from Tahiti offer the widest variety of colours ranging from basic green or grey pearls, to exotic peacock, lime, blue, copper, bronze, or even purple overtones. Although such colours and overtones are rare and uncommon.

Stunning South Sea Pearl jewellery

We sell loose gems as well as set jewellery. We can also custom design especially for you. A large selection of black pearls are also available on request.

Black Pearl

South Sea Pearls are only found in one area of the world, from Broome on the Northwestern coast of Australia through Tahiti to the Indonesian Archipelago.

They range in size from about 10-20 mm in diameter and have lustre unparalleled by other types of pearl. The size and lustre of the South Sea Pearls are due to the thick nacre (or the skin of the pearl) that thrives on the abundance of nutrients and lack of pollution in the water.

White Pearl

Every pearl is completely unique in size, colour and shape, and carries an individual imperfection that adds to its beauty and uniqueness.

The white South Sea Pearls are Australian, coming from our Northwestern shores between Broome and Darwin. The black South Sea Pearls are from the waters around Tahiti. Due to the individuality of each South Sea Pearl, each item we have for sale is a one-only piece, and once sold will be replaced with a similar, yet different piece of fine pearl jewellery.
